Clearing Heads Up Alerts in EASY
The STAR screening window closes on February 9th. We
will need to clear all of the new heads-up alerts starting on February
10. You will not see any new alerts show up before this date. You will
need to look at your students’ scores and determine which students may need
tier adjustments based on these scores. All heads-up alerts should be
cleared by Friday, March 11.

Imagine Learning:
It is essential for all ESOL students to be on Imagine for 20 minutes per day for a total of 100 minutes a week. This program is customized for each student. It is a researched based program proven to show academic growth.
If you are having difficulty finding a time or computer for your students, please consult your ESOL teacher.
Monitored Notes:
Please have monitored notes entered by February 19th. Please write your name next to the comment you provide because several of the students have multiple teachers.
Here are a few guiding questions to help with monitored notes:
1. What are the student’s grades, STAR percentages, F &P levels, etc.?
2. Is the student adjusting socially and academically?
3. Is the waivered student able to be successful without daily ESOL support?
4. What accommodations are provided for the student?
Example:
Strengths
|
_____ is a well-mannered student. She has shown improvement in STAR Reading with a Scaled Score of 237 in August to 391 in mid-December. On the Star Reading Assessment she has moved from the 7 percentile rank (red-urgent intervention) to 29 percentile rank (blue-on watch).- Teacher’s name

Weaknesses/concerns

Instructional Rounds
We will be having our 2nd round of Instructional Rounds this Tuesday. This is where members of our CLC observe in classrooms and give feedback on what is working well and where tweaks could be made. They will be here from about 8:00 am til 11:30 am. Please let your students know that we will be coming around to see all the learning happening in your classrooms!!!

Career Day
We are now only at 14 speakers signed up for career day. This is only enough for 1-2 grade levels to have career day speakers. If you would like your students to be able to experience career day, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE reach out to people to come in!!!!! Here is the link to sign up again:

Student Absences
The chart below shows by grade level how many student absences we have for each month. While this month we have seen a decrease, there were less instructional days than in the past months.
Please see Pitchford if you would like to know how many absences your particular class has since the reports are also pulled by homeroom teacher.
Also, please remember to let Hutchins or Pitchford know once a student is accruing a lot of "medical" absences (more than 6) so that it's on our radar and we can follow up with the parent. A doctor's note has to be provided after 10 medical absences.
We appreciate your support in this effort!!!

Chain Link Fence
Fulton County maintenance has erected a chain link fence behind the portables to protect the air conditioning and heating units from balls, etc. as well as to protect students from injuring themselves while they play. Please mention this to your students and ask them to respect the boundary and refrain from playing & running between the fence and the portables. Thank you.

What I've been thinking about...
Lately we have been discussing the different ways we can support our ESOL students more in the classroom.
Below is a great article from Edutopia giving us 10 Tips for Teaching English-Language Learners in the Classroom!!!
http://www.edutopia.org/blog/teaching-english-language-learners-ayanna-cooper
The article below gives us Strategies and Resources to support our ESOL learners. It reminds us to allow non-English talk in the classroom in order to help students develop vocabulary and concepts in their native language. It also talks about not drowning our ELL students in worksheets and grammar drills. It's a great resource!!!

Summer Offerings for Students
Camp PAWS - This summer, Camp PAWS will be primarily for our high achieving kids that are making low growth. The administration will be selecting 15 students, in each grade K-5, based off their STAR student growth reports. Letters will go out next week. Please direct any parents with questions to Ms. Salmons.
Summer FLP - We will be holding the Flexible Learning Program here at High Point which focuses on math and will be for students in grades K-5. Students will be chosen with the help of homeroom teachers and STAR reports. Students who do NOT pass the math portion of GA Milestones will be automatically offered this summer program. Please direct any questions to Ms. Truesdale regarding this program. Information for parents will be going out in the next month.
Summer School - We will be hosting summer school for students in grades 3 and 5 who did not pass the GA Milestones Reading portion. Information will be going out to parents notifying them of this option but official letters will not go out until scores have been released. If you have any questions, please see Sheri Hess.
