Monday Notes 9.30.19

*********************************************************************
Congratulations!!
Congratulations to Leigha Jones who will be getting married this Friday!! Her finance's name is Jason Blackstock and they will be the Jonestocks after October 5th. We are very happy for them both!

*********************************************************************

Kona Ice Time!
The Kona Ice truck will be positioned near the blacktop on Wednesday, October 2nd during everyone's recess. The scheduled hours are 10:30 am - 12:45 pm.

PreK and 1st-5th can enjoy Kona Ice during their recess time. Kindergarten should go after lunch.
If students bring money, please be cognizant of where they are keeping it (you may want to have a jar or drawer where you keep their money). We want to make sure the money is safe and secure.

Ms. Midkiff and Mr. DiBartolo will be walking around T-shirts, wrist bands, and certificates Monday morning. Thanks!!!

*********************************************************************
Learning Targets
Admin did an informal walkthrough last week to observe 1st - 5th grade classes during math.
Out of the 23 classrooms visited, 60% of them had clear Learning Targets posted. Please remember if our goal is for students to take ownership of their learning, they HAVE to know what they are learning specifically and why. It's not enough to just tell them.

Our students should be able to SEE what they are going to be working on each day. While math was observed, this needs to occur for all subject areas. If you have questions, please let your admin rep know.

*********************************************************************

Parent/Teacher Conferences Begin!
Today is the first day of Parent/Teacher Conferences! The window is from now until October 18th. All conference checklists/forms are posted in each grade level's folder so please make sure they are utilized during conferences. Parent/teacher conferences are a part of the Communication Standard in TKES so please keep record of your conferences.

Also, please make sure you are reaching out to parents in multiple ways to get them to meet with you (Class Dojo, email, text, newsletters, phone calls) because this partnership MATTERS!!!

*********************************************************************

1st Grade IB Unit Complete!
First grade has finished their first Unit of Inquiry, inquiring into how Society is impacted by beliefs, values, and people, and posted their learning in their hallway!

*********************************************************************
Learning Profile Focus for October

This month, we will be focusing on two attributes of the Learner Profile:
Caring and Risk-Taker.
Please make sure you are incorporating these two important attributes into your daily conversations and lessons with students. They will be getting more information on the Morning News as well.

*********************************************************************

Language Skills Checklist
Thanks to all you who have completed these on your Tier 2 & 3 EIP students!!  Please make sure you have completed them all by October 2!  Thank you so much!

*********************************************************************
Student Supports
We appreciate everyone’s willingness to help out and assist when there is a discipline issue. Everyone does a great job of embodying the philosophy that every student is OUR student. With that being said, there are some students who escalate more when adults become involved or the involvement interferes with the data being collected.
Moving forward, we are requesting everyone ask the adult, who is involved in the situation, if they need assistance prior to becoming involved. If the adult requests support, then we appreciate the help. If not, we appreciate you not intervening. If you have any questions regarding this, please see Ashanti Johnson. Thank you!

*********************************************************************
Congratulations - PBIS!
This past week, High Point was named an Operational PBIS School! We want to not only thank the entire staff for helping make this possible but also thank Mr. DiBartolo, Ms. Owens, and Ms. Midkiff as well as the whole PBIS team for their efforts in this honor!!

*********************************************************************
Yoga at HPES
Friendly reminder that Yoga will be every Tuesday at 3:15 pm in the library – our first class was last week and it was phenomenally relaxing. Each class is $10 and you can pay for multiple classes at one time. Reminders: wear comfortable clothes, bring some water, and come ready to stretch and come ready to give your mind a break!

*********************************************************************
Crowd Funding Policy

Teachers - Thank you for the time and effort you put into creating a Donor’s Choose or Go Fund Me account for your classroom or grade level.   High Point teachers and students have greatly benefited from these platforms!!
Please remember that High Point needs to remain compliant with the State when receiving donations.

FCSS Policy:
"All crowd funding sites (Go Fund Me or Donor's Choose) must follow the fund raising guidelines by completing a fundraising application form Exhibit E39.  All crowd funding sites must be set up in the name of the school.  The collection of funds must be sent directly to the school by check.  The school’s bank information will not be shared with any third party.  All items donated will become the property of the school and not the property of the employee managing the account.  All crowd funding sites must have an expiration date within that current fiscal year."

Once the Fund Raising Application has been approved, you may create the account/campaign and submit a copy to the Bookkeeper.  After campaign is finished, the Financial Re-Cap For School Fundraisers, Exhibit 40, must be completed to close out the campaign and submit all paperwork to Bookkeeper.

Crowd Funding Fund Raising applications are located on the mailroom wall.

*********************************************************************

Devices
This is just a friendly reminder to make sure you have clear routines and procedures in place for students using devices. A few helpful tips:

- Assign laptops and/or ipads to specific students so that you know who touches that device each day
- Remind students to LOG OUT of their device each time
- Have a protocol in place for when kids have a problem with a device. What do students do if they can't hear, if they can't log on, or if something breaks?
- Put in tech tickets!! We don't know to fix something if it's not reported! Have your students help you with this.

*********************************************************************

PBIS SAS Survey - Due Sept. 25th

The PBIS Self-Assessment Survey (SAS) is used by school staff for initial and annual assessment of effective behavior support systems in their school. The survey examines the status and need for improvement of four behavior support systems: (a) school-wide discipline systems, (b) non-classroom management systems (e.g., cafeteria, hallway, playground, (c) classroom management systems, and (d) systems for individual students engaging in chronic problem behaviors.
Each question in the survey relates to one of the four systems.

Survey results are summarized and used for a variety of purposes including:
1. annual action planning
2. internal decision making
3. assessment of change over time
4. awareness building of staff
5. team validation.

The survey summary is used to develop an action plan for implementing and sustaining effective behavioral support systems throughout the school.

Survey: https://www.pbisassessment.org/Anon/7Di101kF3G0

PLEASE do not mark “Not in place” if you are unsure if the strategy is being used.
INSTEAD ask Mr. DiBartolo or Ms. Owens.
We had several mis-marks on last year’s survey after discussions with staff. Thanks!

School Board Proposed Calendar Update

At last week's school board work session, staff submitted item 7.03, 2019-20 School Year Calendar Revision, which is a plan to address safety and security at our schools during state-wide elections.

As you are aware, the high-volume participation of our public during state-wide elections carries the potential for increased security concerns and disruption to instruction on those days. Therefore, staff recommended that the Board of Education make all state-wide election days digital learning days.  This would apply to this school year as well as future school years.

By utilizing digital learning, students will be able to maintain their focus on instruction while not on campus. These days would be regular workdays for employees.  This approach allows staff to participate in high quality professional development.
The two days in the current school year impacted by this proposal would be April 21, 2020, and May 19, 2020. The adjusted assessment calendar, if adopted, for end of grade milestones tests is below:

Staff also recommended that the March 13th work day remain as it was originally published (as a workday). This also comes after the recommendation of March 24th as a teacher work day. The new calendar is below.

Please note: HPES is looking at CANCELING the March 16th RFF day due to these missed instructional days.

More information about the digital learning days will be forthcoming.

*********************************************************************
Reading A-Z Licenses
We currently have 30 active licenses for reading a-z. Each license is very expensive so to save some money this school year, we have reduced the number of licenses in the building to 17, starting September 30th.  There can be multiple users with one single login so please share with your colleagues if needed.
If you have any questions, please let Hess know.

Continuous Learning and PBIS
The "Love and Logic" book is one of my all time favorites and I recently decided to reread it. The "cliff notes" to the book are located in the HPES School Information Folder in the PBIS folder if you are interested. Here is one chapter of the book that stood out to me right now.

Four Principals of Love and Logic
Share the control
Share the thinking
Balance consequences with empathy
Maintain self-concept

Remember how to use these by thinking of Love and Logic as having 3 rules:

Use enforceable limits: Telling students how to run their lives usually makes things worse. Tell students how you will be running YOUR life.
Provide choices within limits: Basic rule, “You will either give the other person control on your terms or they will take it on their terms.”
You are more than welcome to….
You are free to…
Would you rather…
What would be best for you...___ or ___?
Apply consequences with empathy: “An effective teacher administers consequences with empathy and understanding, as opposed to anger and lecture.”

Math Buddies
Each year we are excited to partner with our parents and community to support math workshop at High Point.

In previous years our math partnership has been referred to as Math Moms, but we are updating our name to Math Buddies to reflect that we are growing and that dads and other family members want to be a part of this effort.

Kerstin Long will be training a new group of Math Buddy volunteers on Tuesday, September 10.  The volunteers learn about how we do math at High Point and how to support teachers and their students during math workshop by using open-ended questions and guiding students to think and express themselves mathematically.  We want our Math Buddies to support you during the work session of math workshop when kids are grappling with new ideas and concepts.  Many of our Math Buddy volunteers are bilingual and can assist in translating core instruction into Spanish while you teach.

If you would like a Math Buddy in your classroom, please email Mariana Mendoza to coordinate a volunteer for you.  Once Math Buddies are placed, you and the volunteer will agree on a support schedule and communicate directly with each other.

Our math volunteers become important and valued members of our classroom communities and our students greatly benefit from this unique support.

Building the Learner Profile
The "Building the Learner Profile" team would like to start showcasing the attributes of the Learner Profile and have students take ownership of understanding and embodying them every day. Beginning in October, we will focus on one to two of the attributes each month. They will be:

October - Caring and Risk-Taker
November - Reflective
December - Open-Minded
January - Principled and Communicator
February - Knowledgeable
March - Balanced and Inquirer
April - Thinker
May - Review all

More information will be given about how we will celebrate, teach, and embody these attributes! Stay tuned!

Learning Expeditions/Field Trips
As you are making your plans for all the wonderful learning expeditions this year, here are some new processes, reminders and things to consider:

1. Packets with everything you need are available by the mailbox. Make sure to select the CORRECT one for your purposes (Off Campus vs In House)
2. A checklist is included to help you keep track of what is needed
3. All items must be completed thoroughly with as much detail as possible. (Ex. The section on the orange form that asks for information about standards, pre, during & post activities should be very specific and intentional about the learning connections. If you need help or additional clarification, just ask Lib)
4. Fully completed packets go in Lib’s mailbox for approval. She will verify the school calendar, the completeness of the requested information and the intentional learning connections. Incomplete forms will be returned for more information.
5. Lib will provide to Carrie for her approval and Assistant Superintendent’s approval if required.
6. Colleen will post on calendar, order buses and keep track of your available funds
7. PTA has donated $2,000 per grade-level to help with your costs.  Additional fund requests may be made via the new Field Trip Permission form (currently being updated and available shortly)
8. Money collected to defray costs should be given to Colleen DAILY, rather than when all funds are collected.
