Math Buddies
Each year we are excited to partner with our parents and community to support math workshop at High Point.

In previous years our math partnership has been referred to as Math Moms, but we are updating our name to Math Buddies to reflect that we are growing and that dads and other family members want to be a part of this effort.

Kerstin Long will be training a new group of Math Buddy volunteers on Tuesday, September 10.  The volunteers learn about how we do math at High Point and how to support teachers and their students during math workshop by using open-ended questions and guiding students to think and express themselves mathematically.  We want our Math Buddies to support you during the work session of math workshop when kids are grappling with new ideas and concepts.  Many of our Math Buddy volunteers are bilingual and can assist in translating core instruction into Spanish while you teach.

If you would like a Math Buddy in your classroom, please email Mariana Mendoza to coordinate a volunteer for you.  Once Math Buddies are placed, you and the volunteer will agree on a support schedule and communicate directly with each other.

Our math volunteers become important and valued members of our classroom communities and our students greatly benefit from this unique support.

Infinite Campus and Continuous Achievement Levels
All 1st-5th grade teachers will see an Advanced course in their Infinite Campus gradebook for Reading and ELA. If you have any discrepancies with what you have on that roster and what is on your Star Cards, please email Hess so we can get that resolved as quickly as possible.

Building the Learner Profile
The "Building the Learner Profile" team would like to start showcasing the attributes of the Learner Profile and have students take ownership of understanding and embodying them every day. Beginning in October, we will focus on one to two of the attributes each month. They will be:

October - Caring and Risk-Taker
November - Reflective
December - Open-Minded
January - Principled and Communicator
February - Knowledgeable
March - Balanced and Inquirer
April - Thinker
May - Review all

More information will be given about how we will celebrate, teach, and embody these attributes! Stay tuned!

Learning Expeditions/Field Trips
As you are making your plans for all the wonderful learning expeditions this year, here are some new processes, reminders and things to consider:

1. Packets with everything you need are available by the mailbox. Make sure to select the CORRECT one for your purposes (Off Campus vs In House)
2. A checklist is included to help you keep track of what is needed
3. All items must be completed thoroughly with as much detail as possible. (Ex. The section on the orange form that asks for information about standards, pre, during & post activities should be very specific and intentional about the learning connections. If you need help or additional clarification, just ask Lib)
4. Fully completed packets go in Lib’s mailbox for approval. She will verify the school calendar, the completeness of the requested information and the intentional learning connections. Incomplete forms will be returned for more information.
5. Lib will provide to Carrie for her approval and Assistant Superintendent’s approval if required.
6. Colleen will post on calendar, order buses and keep track of your available funds
7. PTA has donated $2,000 per grade-level to help with your costs.  Additional fund requests may be made via the new Field Trip Permission form (currently being updated and available shortly)
8. Money collected to defray costs should be given to Colleen DAILY, rather than when all funds are collected.
