No Place for Hate
High Point is joining hundreds of schools across the country in building a community of respect, character, and unity in our school. No Place for Hate is an initiative through the Anti-Defamation League that recognizes schools that are going above and beyond to create schools that foster safe and anti-bullying and biased environments. To become a No Place for Hate school, we have to meet a number of criteria including creating a student committee, having students and teachers sign a resolution of respect, and completing three school wide anti-bullying and diversity education activities. Our 5th grade peer leaders will serve as our committee, and they are already hard at work planning and initiating activities to help us reach this goal. Next week, we will focus on the No Place for Hate Promise that all students need to sign. The peer leaders will discuss this on the morning announcements throughout the week, and a representative will bring a copy of the pledge to your classroom on Friday morning for your class to sign.

TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT IN YOUR CLASSROOM
If you are looking to bump up your teaching and integrate more technology, then Brian would love to help. As part of his Vanguard membership, he is required to mentor 5 teachers by supporting their goals and current technology use. The range of topics and tech uses is wide open. You could be a beginner or expert, and he has also purchased some fun tech toys that you could use in your classroom if you participate. Interested? Contact Brian now!

What I've been thinking about...

What did the longest study on happiness conclude?

According to this TED Talk, it's all about relationships. We might think it's money or fame (I know I bought a Powerball ticket) but the true key to happiness is the relationships we form.

I believe this is also the key to "work happiness." Education is a difficult job and we need relationships to help us feel important, supported, appreciated, validated, etc... Relying on our colleagues and forming positive relationships might just be the way to a "good life." Check                                 out the video below!

ALSO......

Have you visited http://www.pbisworld.com/?  Teachers this is a great (and free) resource to use for tracking data with fidelity and forms for documentation of behavior interventions. This website gives multiple suggestions of things that can help with student behaviors from impulsiveness to tardiness.
************VISUALS OF IB*************

Ms. Cahloun and Ms. Daniels took IB Transdisciplinary learning  to a new level at High Point last week!  They blended their studies of Colonial America with their science investigations of simple machines and created an opportunity for students to solve a real problem that people in Colonial days faced using two or more simple machines.  Students worked in teams to design and market their product, then presented using a model of Shark Tank.  Judges inquired about costs, design, marketability and practicality and decided whether to invest or pass! Students showed well thought out answers to difficult questions and mastery of simple machines and Colonial times!

https://blogs.ibo.org/sharingpyp/2016/01/19/a-powerful-journey-from-central-idea-to-action/ Great article about how a 1st grade class  embraced  their central idea and took action!  Especially interesting, for economic units on the horizon!

******VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE*******

In Ms. Negrin’s 1st grade class, she utilizes this chart as a closing (or informal assessment) for many lessons in all subject areas. This chart gives students a choice to determine which learner profile they are exhibiting and a sentence starter to begin conversations about what they have learned. In addition, she uses their writing to reflect on her teaching practices for the lesson and what she can do to better engage the students based on what they are inquiring, knowledgeable, thinking, and reflecting.

Inquirer: One question I still have is…
Knowledgeable: Today I learned…
Thinker: Something I found interesting was...
Reflection: The most important thing I learned is...

Celebration of Data from 4th grade Writing
4th grade celebrated their Unit 2 Informational writing data from Pre to Post.

Check out the progress that our 4th graders have made!

84% of their students moved at LEAST .5 year (OVERALL piece on rubric)
57% of their students moved a year or more (OVERALL piece on rubric)
22% of their students moved 1.5 years or more (OVERALL piece on rubric)

RTI Reminders
  • Tier 3 cutoff date for grades 1-5 is February 29th (Grade K needs to check with Brian)
  • When changing a student’s Tier level in EASY, please generate a summary report BEFORE the Tier change. Please see Brian for assistance.
  • When screening is completed after February 9th, we will look at our data and make RTI changes as needed. If your grade level  has completed a subject, begin looking at the data now!
  • When requesting to move a student to move to Tier 3, please request a meeting with Brian and collect ALL student data in that subject as well as ACCESS scores if applicable.

STAR SCREENING REMINDERS

  • When arriving for screening, please bring your entire math or reading class (which may not be your homeroom students). Please collect all of the students from other classes before you arrive.
  • Brian will be printing reports for every student once the screening window closes on February 9th.
  • The growth report is an excellent way to monitor each student’s progress using the Student Growth Percentile. This is a unique measurement, that we all need to learn more about. Please know that the scores will update overnight, so DO NOT use the SGP score on the day that you take it. Please request Brian to join your grade-level meeting or PLC to explain it more. (SGP score: 1-29 is considered low growth, 30-60 is considered expected growth, and 61-99 is considered high growth)
  • Please be aware of your students’ accommodations when arriving. Lists will be provided, but we want to double check on all settings.
**********************************************************
ACCESS Testing
Testing for ACCESS will begin on Thursday, January 21st through March 2nd. Our plan is to complete testing prior to the March 2nd deadline. However, in order to expedite the number of days for testing, students will be pulled for one hour increments. Students will not be pulled during their regularly scheduled ESOL block. Every student will not be tested every day. I will email you with the schedule on Tuesday. Students will take ACCESS online this year and this is new to our students and staff. Therefore, please be flexible if/when scheduling changes are needed.

Let’s talk about Toiletries. Mr. Harry and Mr. Derick have been checking the bathrooms every afternoon. The biggest area where we can see improvement is in keeping the tissue off of the floor. Talk with your students about making sure to flush the tissue paper.

The winners for last week were:

1st/3rd Grade GIRLS restroom
             and
Pre-K BOYS restroom

In Ms. Bradshaw’s 2nd grade class, students are utilizing Inquiry Sketch Books. Students “activate” their Inquiry books using paint.  This is how the students set the theme of their page(s). Ms. Bradshaw is using it with her students as a form of inquiry on their own during their independent centers. The sketch books are being used to explore the biographies in Social Studies and giving the students the freedom to be creative.
Ms. Bradshaw introduced the sketch books this past week so students diving in with their first page all about themselves.

Parent Informational Session for GA Milestones
The administrative team will be holding a parent informational session tomorrow from 5:00-6:00 pm in the media center. This session is to help parents of 4th and 5th grade students know how to read the individualized student reports as well have a better understanding of how this standardized assessment differs from the CRCT.
This session has been advertised in the newsletters, Principal's Blog, etc... so they should know about it.

RTI Updates
As you know, we will begin STAR Screening this week, and this will give us a chance to check in on our school’s academic progress. This new data will provide an opportunity for us to change gears with our intervention groups if needed. We will talk more once the testing window closes on February 9th, until then, please consider the following thoughts:
  • February 29th will be the cutoff for students moving up to Tier 3 (unless they are new to our school after that point), so please meet with Brian before this date if you feel your student needs to move to Tier 3
  • Once the STAR Screening window closes, the flags in EASY will change, and we will need to update them again. Please do not worry about this now, we will complete this task in late February and March. Do not do this ahead of time since your work may be lost!! Please wait for my go-ahead.
  • Please make sure your math and reading classes in TAC are correct for STAR Screening. Please complete a pink roster change request with Ms. Fears to correct errors.
  • I have met with many of you to chat about your RTI students and it is always helpful to have your data ready to go. I often ask about F&P, Access Levels, Grades, and other data points to make decisions. I hate to take up your time, so having this information ready with save you time. Thanks!

Let’s Talk Toilets!

Seriously folks! This month let’s review the Paws Up procedures for using the restroom. We encourage you to take time in your lesson plans to walk students to the restroom and discuss cleanliness, responsibility, and respect. A few of the grade levels have noticed tissue not being flushed or being placed in the toilets. A few other things to mention is keeping soap and water in the sinks. The hallway with the cleanest bathrooms will win the Golden Plunger Award which will be mentioned on the Monday morning news. Mr. Derrick and Mr. Harry will also be rewarding students on that hallway with tickets. Let’s keep things clean!

******VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE*******

In Ms. Nobles’ 5th grade class, students are wondering “Where In The World It Is.” Ms. Nobles puts a picture up from the Junior Scholastic magazine and students make inquiries about the picture. They read through the clues that are given as a group and they “observe” the picture. The students put “I Wonder” statements up. It is then left open to take the clues and research “Where in the world it is.” Students are given choice how they want to present the information. Many of the students choose to stay in for lunch to research with their group or on their own or with a partner.  It’s all about choice and giving the students an opportunity to ask questions!

In Ms. Ellis’ 2nd grade class, she encourages individual creativity using the Squiggle book. Students imagine, create, and write about their squiggles. They are begging for more! How could you use this strategy in your classroom?

************IB in PRACTICE*************

Ms. Simon's class  played, "I Am… Who Needs…. "  using yarn as the representation of the flow of money in our economy. Each student drew a card with information about their occupation and related costs. They passed the yarn from person to person as costs and benefits were discussed. They observed how the yarn spread into a web…showing how connected we are in the economy. They were able to see and talk about what happens when the web stops…and why….Recession, Depression!
