Yes I Can Award!
Sophia Stilson won the Yes I Can! award for High Point Elementary. The Yes I Can! award celebrates students with special needs who have made outstanding growth throughout the year.

Sophia has made so much personal and academic growth since the beginning of the school year. She has really started to push herself. Sophia takes pride in her work and tries very hard to keep herself organized. Sophia has gone above and beyond to make new friends, welcome new students to our class, and has really started to come out of her shell. Sophia has also developed a higher level of self-awareness this year. She is able to recognize her own strengths and weaknesses and does her best to work with and be kind to others around her. Sophia pushes herself to always do her best and is eager to learn. This has had a positive impact on her confidence level and her academic growth this year.

Spring Cleaning with a Purpose
Sandi Dennis’ daughter, Colson Dennis, is an 8th grade student and will be collecting gently used picture books or elementary grade chapter books to create home libraries for High Point ESOL children for summer reading.
Her project has benefited over 200 children in the past and will reach over 125 of our own children this year but she needs your help!

Please bring donations of used picture books or chapter books to the High Point Media Center. A collection bin will be located near the green screen wall in the back of the Media Center.  Every donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference!

If you have questions please contact Sandi Dennis.

Attendance
The graph for student attendance is below. There were a lot of student absences from January until the end of February. Most of the absences were due to sickness and we appreciate parents for keeping students, who might be contagious, at home. While we know that most absences were due to medical issues, please continue to monitor your students' absences and encourage them to come into school each day (when well). Thanks for your help with this!!

*****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE******

The special area teachers created an event for grades 3-5 called The Amazing Race before we left for the break.  It was based on the TV show.

The students were divided into teams. The teams were given a card with 5 pictures of an area of the campus and an answer sheet.  They had to figure out where each picture was and go there.  Traveling, they had to all hold onto a rope, to insure everyone stayed together.  When there, they found a card that told them which country they were in along with a question they must answer.  After they found all 5 areas and answered the questions, they reported back to the gym to see how they placed.

It was "amazing" to watch the students working together, learning, and having fun!!

We appreciate everyone for coming to hear Carol Taylor speak regarding classroom design. Rachel Wooden sent out the Power Point presentation with the hyper links. Please let her know if you did not receive it or ask a colleague.

We realize that most of you are curious about your classroom locations for next year. We will be discussing the 17-18 School Map with everyone at the faculty meeting Tuesday. In the meantime, we appreciate everyone working on the organizational piece of your classroom!!

We will be in touch regarding furniture, classroom aesthetics, color choices, and more consultations with Carol Taylor.

************************************
Student Deportation
I know that many of you have had students that have brought up fears and concerns about the increased push for deportation. Here are some quick dos and don’ts of what you can say in response:

Do:
Give an empathetic response (“It sounds like it is very scary for you when your parents talk about this.”)
Remind students of all the people that are fighting for them and supporting them.
Be more patient with students that have increased behaviors due to this stress. Remember that they may not be sleeping well.
Remember that parents might be more guarded and may be less likely to drive to different events.
Remind other students to be sensitive to these kids no matter what their personal beliefs are.

Don’t:
Tell students they have nothing to worry about or that everything will be okay.
Say that only criminals or “bad people” will be deported.

If you have any students that need additional emotional support beyond this, please contact me.

Thank you- Rachel Wooden
