What I've Been Thinking About…

Below is an article about the importance of asking good questions in order to solicit thinking from our students.
"The right question at the right time can make a learning experience.... it jabs and fingers at a learners mind, then burrows like a drill."
This article states that a bad question can "create the illusion of an end-point to thinking." Students answer the question and then think they are done! When in reality, we want them to keep inquiring!!!

PBIS Updates

Our school-wide reward of "Pajama Day" was a huge success!!! Thank you to everyone who participated and don't forget to hand out those tickets to our deserving students!!!!

PBISWorld.com

The Student Behavior Program Specialist from the Central Learning Community, Jose Mena, shared a wonderful resource with members of the admin team. It is a website containing links to hundreds of interventions, supports, resources, and data collection tools, all of which are organized into the tier 1 through 3 framework. It is designed to help guide users through the PBIS implementation process, starting with behavior identification and offering suggestions for interventions and data collection tools.

The PBIS committee will be discussing and reviewing its contents in more detail at our next meeting. However, until then, please feel free to review the website to identify classroom interventions for behaviors that are resulting in reflection sheets and office referrals.

Mrs. Sexton was eager to connect with a classroom from another country to extend her class' global experience. As an open-minded risk-taker, she tweeted, asking for another Kindergarten class around the world to respond. She included the hashtag #IBPYP in her tweet and IB World magazine retweeted her asking for "any takers?". Mrs. Sexton has received two responses; one from an Australian teacher who teaches in Bangkok and one from a teacher in Kuwait. Stay tuned to see where this inquiry will take them!

*****MATH CORNER**********

Model Lessons from the Georgia Math Frameworks

If you want to get an idea of what the Frameworks look like in action, the GADOE has compiled videos of math workshops being taught in grades K-5 and beyond.  The link below features one math frameworks lesson from each unit.  This is a great way to put your toe in the water if you want to see how other teacher “do frameworks.”  If you are ready to try them out with your class, Kerstin can co-facilitate a math workshop with you.

Other math-y things happening at High Point are:
  • Redbird Advanced Learning is up and running in grades K-5.  This is the perfect activity for kids during your RTI math block while you are working with small groups.  You can get kids online with Redbird by going to:

o   The Fulton County website -www.fultonschools.org
o   Click the Students and Parents tab and select Resources
o   Click the Redbird Advanced Learning link under the Student Area
o   The username is your student ID number in the format student ID #@fcs.org
o   Password is student birthday in the format mmddyyyy
o   Be sure to use Chrome as your browser!

AR Update

The PTA's Board has met and we have decided to continue using Renaissance Learning's AR program this year.  We feel it is an important tool to encourage reading in our students.  We considered other programs, but concluded that AR best aligns with students' reading levels from the STAR testing you administer and our library is arranged so that students can easily find books on their level to read.
We hope you will support and encourage students who wish to take tests and allow them the opportunities to do that without conflicting with your classroom expectations.

The program will start this year on September 16th and run through early May for our 1st through 5th graders.  We will explore a reading incentive program for our Kindergarten readers later this year.  We have simplified the prize structure and will award students certificates to use at our book fairs.

Please let Melissa Wilson, Lisl Dickinson, or any member of the Board know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Fall Festival

High Point's Fall Festival will be this Saturday, September 26th from 11:00-3:00!!! This is the one event each year where our PTA appreciates your support and attendance.

PTA will be handing out flyers to staff regarding admissions: Staff children are $10 and adults are free!!

If you are interested in volunteering, please use the link below. We truly appreciate your support to make this successful!!

CLC Instructional Rounds

Because we have a large number of staff out this Wednesday for Yom Kippur, the CLC team has rescheduled their Instructional Round for November 5th. We will update everyone closer to the day. Thanks!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

As the STAR window closes and we are well into the school year, you might be beginning to schedule your parent/teacher conferences. Please remember to include the collaborating teachers (if possible) in these conferences such as ESOL, EIP, SPED, and Special Areas.
You will have October 9th to schedule your conferences however, you are more than welcome to begin them now. Thanks!!

In the News

Congratulations to our current 5th graders who were recently featured in the AJC for the garden they created last year as 4th graders. We were so excited to see this garden being created and giving our students an opportunity to see their work and planning become a reality. A huge thank you to the fourth grade teachers for supporting this project and making this project possible for our students!

What I've Been Thinking About…

I read an article in TIME magazine this past week titled " How to Make Schools Better for Kids." The administrative team, your SGC, as well as your leadership team are all thinking about ways we can help make High Point better! After reading this article, I know we are on he right track.

Pictures of the article are below but if you would like to read the article, come find me and I will give it to you or place it in your box. It's two pages.

High Point's SGC Request for Flexibility
High Point's SGC has put in our request for flexibility interest form to the county. The request is for an Extended School Day. After looking at research, informally talking to staff, and assessing what our school needs to do to meet our long term strategic plan goals, we have proposed to have a school day that goes from 7:10 am - 3:00 pm.

Please note that this is only our interest form; not the final RFF proposal. For the next 2 months, we will be collecting data and information from staff, students, parents, and Fulton County in order to get multiple perspectives of this proposal. We need to weigh the pros and cons and make sure it's what is best for our students.

Some of the SGC's thoughts on this proposal:

  • By adding 40 minutes each day, we will be able to give our students 15 more days of instruction than other Fulton County Schools.
  • We would be able to keep our 3 Professional Development days (in addition to the county days) and they would not negatively impact our students.
  • We would keep Spanish as a special so that teachers have common planning 5 days a week.
  • We would teach the Spanish language through Science or Social Studies content in order to teach the language as well as support the learning in the classroom.
  • We would add another 45 minute period of Content Spanish to the week. This 45 minute block would be an additional planning period for teachers. It will not be a common planning time.
  • The 40 minutes added to the school day would not be a specific content block. We would add the minutes to the remaining content areas as well as help us give more recess and transition time.
  • We believe this additional time would support our project-based learning and differentiation in the classrooms.
  • If we dismiss at 3:00 pm, we are looking into High Point's homework policy. We want students to read every night but do not want to increase the amount of work students are required to do at home since they will be dismissing 40 minutes later.
  • We need to look into the required after-school meetings such as faculty, leadership, PLCs, and Learning Tuesdays since they will have a later start time. Staff will still only be required to work an 8-hour workday.
We want your opinions and feedback regarding our proposal. Please go to the following link to comment on our RFF proposal. All feedback needs to be submitted prior to October 2nd.

You may also speak to our school SGC representatives if you have any questions. They are: Rachel Salmons, Kerstin Long, Anita Collins, and Susan Marinos.

Here are some reminders from our wonderful cafeteria assistants:

  • Please make sure you are assigning the Table Managers each week.
  • Please give a brief reminder to classes to pick up all their trash each day as we are trying very hard to support Custodial Staff.

****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE****

In Ms. Charles’ 5th grade EIP Reading class, she gave an overview of Inquiry. She modeled what inquiry looks like and sounds like by using a familiar, every day object.  Next she gave her students the Inquiry Log Stems (page 33 in Why are School Buses Always Yellow?) and modeled a few questions using these stems. Students were then presented with a photograph of women from India in a line, with their voting cards, and were asked to use the stems to pose questions about the photo.  The students wrote questions for 5-7 minutes. The students then shared one of their questions that they had wondered about. Ms. Charles help them extend their questions, clarify their questions, and help them turn a statement into a question. She then connected it to their topic for this week which was the right to vote and the 19th amendment and woman’s suffrage. A great example of using inquiry, and global relevance to spark curiosity and excitement into Constitutional Amendments!

In Ms. Ellis’ 2nd grade class, she is using inquiry that is born right out of her own backyard! Her students are wondering “what is it?” Ms. Ellis put a clear, tall habitat in her classroom with a green creature in it, on Monday, without saying a word to the students to see if anyone would notice. On Tuesday, students saw chart paper next to the clear, tall habitat that said, “I wonder…” Students starting filling up sticky notes with noticings and wonderings.  Students continuing to write wonderings and observing.
Ms. Ellis is the only one that actually knows what it is.  Come check it out!

Board Policy - Tutoring

Please remember that according to board policy you are not allowed to tutor students in your class for pay or use our facility for paid tutoring. The board policy is below. Please make sure you are following this policy to avoid any repercussions from the county.

"Professional and classified staff should provide reasonable assistance without charge to students in their own classrooms. To avoid any conflict of interest, such employees shall not accept payment for tutoring any student currently assigned to their classroom. Further, no employee may use any school facility to do any tutoring for which payment is accepted."

Leadership Does "GPS" Too!

In order for our Leadership Team to get a pulse on our school, they will be switching grade levels to observe in each classroom on Tuesday, the 15th. Because of Title I requirements, we had to do this day. We know many of you will be out today due to a holiday so we appreciate you welcoming them to your classrooms on Tuesday.

Each grade chair will be taking informal notes of what is happening in the classroom and will spend less than 10 minutes in each room. Their notes are NOT EVALUATIVE. They are not even attaching teachers' names to their notes. They will be taking notes on what they observe, not on their assumptions.

We are using this information to get a larger picture of what is happening in our school and how we can support each other. We are not asking them to share their observations however, if you would like feedback you are more than welcome to ask!

Supplies

Need supplies for students or your classroom??? Don't forget about the Sandy Springs Educational Force and their supply closet! Our PTA stated that they will even pick up the supplies.

Central Learning Community's Instructional Rounds

On September 23rd, our Central Learning Community support staff (Area Sup, STEM, Humanities, SPED, Discipline, etc...) will be at High Point to do walkthroughs in classrooms. They will be using the Rigor and Relevance Quadrant document as they observe and will give the Administrative Team feedback on what they observed.

They will be spending about 10-15 minutes in each classroom, talking to students and possibly talking to teachers when appropriate.

Remember, you should be in Quadrant A, B, C, and D at different times throughout the school year depending on the needs of your students. You will never only be in one quadrant.

If we are going to reach our three long-term goals of STUDENTS TAKING OWNERSHIP and ACCOUNTABILITY, MEETING LEARNING TARGETS, and USING 21st CENTURY SKILLS TO BUILD COMMUNITY, then we need to give students more rigorous and relevant opportunities and see more classes in Quadrant D as we finish out this year.

Remember, our goal is to be better today than we were yesterday!!

****MATH CORNER**********
Redbird Advance Learning for math will be live for our school on September 21.  We will have more in-depth information coming out, but in the meantime, you can preview this personalized learning resource and get a feel for the experience your students will have while online.  The preview website can be found at www.bit.ly/rbmath.  Please note that you will need to use Google Chrome as your browser for Redbird.  There is preview content for every grade level on the web site.

Students and parents will be able to access Redbird through Fulton County’s web page.  Click on Resources.

The student can scroll down the Resources page to the link.  Their log-ins will be the same as for STAR-the student ID and birthdate.

I hope you will find this media-rich, personalized math program an exciting resource for your students.

****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE****

In Ms. Woods’ kindergarten class, students are authors! Ms. Woods introduced the book The Library Mouse to the students where a little mouse writes a book each night at the close of the library. Every day, in the book, students come in and see a book written and ask “Who wrote this book?” The mouse leaves a note to say that you are amazing author look inside the box. The students see themselves. Ms. Woods has created the “Meet the Author” box for her students so when they feel that they can’t do it or just need an added push, they look in the box to see themselves. This has created a room full of authors! The students in her class know that they can do it. They are excited about writing and use the box when needed. **This is best for students in K-2(possibly 3rd) **
