Student Absence and Tardy Information

We will be sharing our school's Absence and Tardy Data at the next faculty meeting. One of the Central Learning Community goals is to decrease the number of absences and tardies.
Of course, it starts by being aware of our students and reporting major absences or tardies. Please make sure you are continuing to do the following:

  • Teachers receive all notes from parents (medical, sick, vacation, religious holiday, etc..) and the teacher marks the absence in TAC. If you receive a note after an absence, change the absence in TAC to reflect the note.
  • If the note comes AFTER 20 days, the teacher does not have access to change it in TAC. Please send the note to Jenna Chapman to put it in the system.
  • If a child is out for a religious holiday and has a note, mark the absence RELIGIOUS
  • If  a child is absent for 3 or more days (within a small time period) and you do not have a note from the parent, please fill out a Social Work Referral. Send to Ms. Hutchins.
  • If  a child begins to have excessive tardies, please fill out a Social Work Referral. Send to Ms. Hutchins.
  • If a parent tells you they are withdrawing, please tell them to request withdrawal paperwork from Ms. Fears and then email Ms. Fears and Ms. Hutchins to let them know.
  • If a parent tells you their child will be absent for a long period of time due to medical reasons, please email Ms. Hutchins.
  • If you have any questions about student tardies or absences, please contact Vaneisa Hutchins.

GA Milestones State Data Released
State data for GA Milestones was released last week. Results place students in 4 categories: Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner, and Distinguished Learner.
The goal, of course, is to have our students be Proficient or Distinguished Learners.

Specific county and school data will be released mid-October. Currently, we are helping educate parents regarding the GA Milestones results through Title I Meetings, Principal's Blog, and Newsletters so they have a better understanding of the results once they are released.

Please remember that this is baseline data!!! We will improve each year moving forward!

Ms. Synder and Ms. Laird are now here on Wednesday and Thursday.

Please double check the schedule Ms. Alexander sent out last week. Because the people changed, your day might have changed!!!  The schedule is also placed on the T-drive under Handbook 2015-2016.

What I've Been Thinking About…

Have you thought about how your classroom looks through the lens of a child?

In this article from Edutopia, they ask the questions...

  • Do you have mystery objects that attract the curiosity of students, leading them to ask questions that foster meaningful conversations?
  • Is your classroom visually stimulating for the students?
  • Does it cultivate creativity, and more importantly, is it filled with objects, images, and even props that help your students learn -- even when they think they're not learning?

PBIS

The new cafeteria plan has been going great, and there have been many comments about improved behavior. Please remember that once you earn 10 dots, you will take them down and start earning them all again! We want the students to stay motivated and continue to have something to work for. Enjoy your extra recess time!

The things you dream about for your classroom can turn into reality faster than you may think!  If you have a great idea and need funds, I am happy to help you write a grant.

****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE****

In 3rd grade, students are using sketchbooks to display and reflect on what they've learned about in Science and Social Studies as a part of their reader's workshop. Ms. McClelland's class launched their first double page spread on Paul Revere by activating their sketchbooks with teabags. The purpose of activating is to "activate their prior knowledge" about the topic; therefore, they used tea bags to remind them about the Boston Tea Party, protests on taxes, Sons of Liberty, etc. Now that they have activated their sketchbooks, students will get to tap into their creative side and create their double page spreads about Paul Revere using a rubric to guide their thinking.

Ms. Negrin, in 1st grade, is using the app SEESAW to communicate with her parents which sight words their child is working on for the week. She takes a picture of the sight word list and records a message to go along with the picture. This helps parents know what they can work on with their child. What an amazing communication tool to use with your parents!

*****WRITERS' GALLERY**********

The pledge and writers' gallery is hosted by Ms. Silverman's class this week.
