High Point turned 50 and it's time to celebrate! We will be having our 50th Celebration at the Church of Atonement on March 1st. It is an adult only party/fundraiser for our school! Tickets are normally $50 but are half-price for teachers and their guests. There will be a live band, excellent food, and your ticket includes 2 drink tickets.
PTA will be selling tickets at the February luncheon and will take cash, credit, or check. We REALLY hope you will be there along with everyone who has been a part of High Point!

Technology Tip for the Week!

iPad App Change Procedure
There have been many requests and questions about the iPads for students. The Technology and Media committees have been in collaboration to create a systematic approach for updating and altering the apps on the school iPads. Please see the new procedure below:

Altering the iPads includes adding AND removing apps:

Please use the link below to put in your requests.

All requests will be reviewed MONTHLY at a joint Media/Technology meeting. The committees will make the decision and feedback will be sent out to the person making the request. A monthly email will be sent out listing the changes.

Please feel free to email questions or concerns to Jennifer Taylor, Chellye Pomeroy and Gray Griffith.
CHANGE REQUESTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY EMAILS! QUESTIONS ONLY!

This link is to be used to changes only (adding and removing apps!) If you have a technological problem, please send an email!

What I've Been Thinking About…

This week, I have been fortunate enough to have some great discussions with many teachers about "our purpose." This is a wonderful blog which talks about keeping a clear focus and engaging our students in some project-based learning. It's definitely something to think about!
Thank you to Ms. Rutledge and Ms. Spears for exposing me to this article!

Safety

Teachers, please remind your parents who will be volunteering or visiting in your classroom that they have to sign-in at the front desk and wait until the front office staff speaks with the teacher before they go to the classrooms. Thank you to help us keep our school safe!

Please also remember to NOT park along the red curb in the lower parking lot. Our fire marshall came and said that it is continuing to be a problem. He is going to have to give tickets to any car that is not legally parked. We appreciate your cooperation!

Previewing
In Ms. Bradshaw’s 2nd grade class, students can preview upcoming units by looking at pictures, books, posters, and any manipulatives which relate to the topic. This is a great strategy to get students engaged and give them an opportunity to build some background knowledge.

What I've Been Thinking About…

This week, I’ve been thinking about engaging our students and teaching them to be inquisitive. In a recent article posted in Edutopia, Richard Curwin says, “students pick up their teacher’s mood and the intellectual and emotional climate of a classroom within seconds of walking in.” Click on the link below to read about his ideas for starting lessons with energy and excitement!

****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICES****

In Ms. Taylor’s 4th grade classroom, technology is a “household” term. Students were using laptops to research information for a project. Technology also changes the way teachers teach, offering educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and assess student understanding through multiple means. It also enhances the relationship between teacher and student. When technology is effectively integrated into subject areas, teachers grow into roles of adviser, content expert, and coach. Technology helps make teaching and learning more meaningful and fun. Properly used, technology will help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy.

New Year Data Driven Culture Reminders

State Longitudinal Data System (SLDS)

Are you looking for lesson ideas and resources to support the Common Core Standards? Do you have a new student and want more data? Check out the State Longitudinal Data System (SLDS) for resources to assist you and your students. It also gives you historical data on each of your students…even if they are from another Georgia school. We receive points toward our school’s CCRPI score for having at least 50% usage from our teachers on a monthly basis. Please contact Ms. Reed if you need assistance with accessing your SLDS account.

Data Driven Culture Reminders:

Please keep in mind the following Math Unit Assessment Modification Procedures that we implemented several months ago:

1. Step 1 (Meet as team to take the post assessment before the unit begins)

2. Step 2 (discuss as a team which items that need to be removed or edited, and solidify why?)

3. Step 3 (Turn your assessment and suggested modifications into Ms. Reed for approval….be sure to state why your grade level wants to change each item)

4. Step 4 (Receive the approved copy from Ms. Reed no more than a week after it is submitted)
