Congratulations!
Congratulations to Lauren McClelland who received the Central Learning Community's "You Rock" Award last week. Teachers and staff are nominated by each school in the CLC for exemplifying the Leadership Essentials of Creating Value, Leading by Example, Embracing Changes, and Developing our Capability. Lauren was nominated by the administrative team and was chosen to receive this award out of the 20+ schools in our learning community. We are very proud of Lauren and the work she does for our school and students!
Congratulations again to our Teacher and Professional Employee finalists as well as Michelle and Vera for representing High Point for the 2016-2017 school year!!! We are very proud of all of you.

PBIS
Looking for a way
to encourage Paws Up behavior? Here is a great idea from PBIS World. Try
something new this week to motivate Paws-itive behavior J
The
Praise Game
Why should I do it?
·
Classroom misbehavior can reduce time on task and student
learning. This intervention can help reinforce positive behaviors.
·
This intervention supports the special needs of Tier II and Tier
III students in your class by protecting their self-esteem and avoiding
singling them out.
When should I do it?
·
The Praise Game should be played for the whole class period.
Ideally, you should play the Praise Game every day to promote consistency with
your students.
How do I do it?
·
Separate your students into “Teams” (i.e. by table groups).
Write each table name on the board.
·
Teach your students no more than 3 key classroom expectations.
Good examples are Follow Instructions, Ignore Distractions, and Participation
·
Set a timer to go off every 3-5 minutes. Whenever the timer goes
off, praise and award a point on the board to each team/table that has met all
expectations.
·
Note that it is “all or nothing” for each team/table. If one
student was missing an expectation, the team/table does not receive the point.
They can try again in just a few minutes!
·
At the end of the period, each team that receives at least 80%
of the possible points receives a prize (ie pull from a treasure box). If
applicable, you can award points/tickets in your school-wide token economy as
the prize.

Senator Hill
Senator Hill will be touring High Point on February 23rd from 8:00-9:30. I am excited to show him all of the wonderful things happening in our PreK-5th grade classrooms as well as all the special areas.
If you have not done so already, please make sure your bulletin boards are updated and hallways are inviting. He has never been in a public school before so we want to show off the amazing things we have to offer!!!
********************************************************** Instructional Rounds
Thank you to everyone for welcoming our Central Learning Community team last week. They had many wonderful things to say about the instruction happening in our building. Some of the positive things we heard were:
- Teachers were differentiating for their students
- Small groups were happening in all grades and all subject areas
- Students were well-managed, polite, and respectful
- There was a lot more student collaboration happening in the classrooms
Thanks!!!
The final Instructional Round will be held on March 24th.

Progress Reports in STAR Reading
This issue has now been resolved in STAR, so if you are
trying to create progress monitoring reports for students in STAR reading, you
should be able to do so now. Please let Brian know if you continue to
have trouble with this. Also, I have placed many reports for all teachers in
your One Drive “Shared with Me” folder. There are screening, growth, and
instructional reports available for grades 1-5, and EL reports for grade K.
Clearing Heads Up Alerts in EASY
It is now time to clear all of the new heads-up alerts in EASY. If a student is continuing on the plan that you currently have in place, then you simple need to state, “This student will continue with additional support as based on classroom performance” and then click on the continue tier button; no other work needs to be done. If you are changing a tiers or interventions, you will need to create a summary before any of the changes are made. Blue diamonds will also need to be cleared by using one of the following statements: This student receives enrichment through (advanced reading/math) OR This student is successful with on-grade-level material and does not need enrichment at his time.
Confused? Please ask Brian for help, and he will assist. All heads-up alerts must be cleared by Friday, March 11.
**********************************************************RTI UPDATES
Please make sure that all students who are in Tier 2 and 3 for Behavior, Reading, Math, Writing, or Language have updated plans. We are close to the end of the year, and our goal is to make final decisions about all RTI students so that there is no carry-over of plans to the following year. For example, we will not be able to say that students need 4 weeks of data at the beginning of next year and then request testing. At the beginning of next year, we will need to complete all initial meetings before making decisions for next steps. Please begin discussing students and prepare to make decisions (stay at a Tier, go up/down a tier, request testing) for our final RTI Meetings.
· February 29, 2016, will be the last day to
have students approved for Tier 3 support. Please request a meeting
with Brian to get an SST meeting scheduled. Ms. Radford will not schedule a
meeting unless the request comes from Brian. Also, several teachers have met
with Brian, and he requested a couple more weeks of data. Please follow up with
him with the progress of your students.
·
Please note that Imagine
Learning and Do the Math have been added to the Tier 3 lists in EASY. Please
feel free to use these programs for Tier 3 needs.
The following article was shared at the Rigor 101 training and was very interesting. We converse using educational jargon way too often and "rigor" seems to always come up. Of course, the question is, do we really know what rigor is?
The author of this article has three thoughts as it pertains to rigor:
1. Rigor is simply pushing yourself beyond what is easy.
2. Students need to understand that struggling is ok!
3. Every minute of every day should NOT be rigorous.

3rd grade turned their classrooms into one of the 5 Georgia habitats to give the students a more hands-on, visual experience. The students needed to make inferences to determine what room was which habitat. They had to notice the land features, the animals in the room, the sounds they heard and then draw their conclusions. 3rd grade wanted to give the students, especially their ELLs a more hands-on way to learn the science content standards. It was an amazing experience!!!
