Hispanic Heritage Month
"During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture.
Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.
Hispanic Heritage Month, whose roots go back to 1968, begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12.
The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. On the 2010 Census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or 'another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.'
Today, 57.5 million people or 18% of the American population are of Hispanic or Latino origin. This represents a significant increase from 2000, which registered the Hispanic population at 35.3 million or 13% of the total U.S. population." - HispanicHeritage.com
At High Point Elementary, approximately 40% of our population is Hispanic. We will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and show-casing the many Hispanic or Latino men and women who have made a positive impact in our society!

Strong 4 Life Pep Rally
This is a friendly reminder that we will have our Strong 4 Life Pep Rally this Friday beginning at 1:30 in the gym. Please do not head to the gym until your grade level is called.
The focus for this pep rally is being healthy, drinking a lot of water, and being more physically active. We appreciate you getting your students excited for this pep rally and being an active participant!!!

Coffee in the Lounge
Thanks to some gracious donors there are now coffee makers in both the teachers' lounges. Right now, they are stocked with coffee but will not be able to be restocked so please enjoy the coffee while supplies last. If you would like to donate coffee or create a coin jar to collect donations for coffee to purchase later, that is fine. We hope you all enjoy this nice morning pick-me-up!!!

Girls on the Run - Dance Night!
On October 5th, the good4girls organization is throwing a cardio dance party at Tongue and Groove! Who doesn’t want to party in their workout clothes? All proceeds from the event support the Girls on the Run Atlanta organization. Tickets cost $30 and include entrance, a beverage, a 45 minute cardio dance workout, and an amazing swag bag! If you have any other questions check out the website (you may recognize a few familiar faces) or ask Jennifer Silverman! www.good4girls.com

Attendance
Teachers - please make sure you are taking attendance every day by 8:30 am! Our system calls parents to notify them if their child is absent and does so by 11:00 am. If you forget to take attendance, the parents will get a call stating their child is absent. We don't want any parent to get a phone call that their child is absent when they are really present. Thank you for your attention to this!

TIAA Charitable donated about 25 earbuds for students. If you have a few students who are in need of headphones, please come see Colleen Zeller.

From Your KSU Coach
Schedule: I will be at High Point on T 9/18, Th 9/20 and F 9/21.
Notes: Try expanding upon your students' use of Seesaw tools! After students take a picture, they can annotate over the picture with drawings, labels and recording using the arrow tool to highlight portions of the image.
For example: Take a picture of base ten blocks, record an explanation while highlighting the amount of hundreds, tens and ones and write the number over the picture.

Highlights: Check out this infographic from 'Shake Up Learning's' (https://shakeuplearning.com/) Kasey Bell. The work you are doing with integrating best practices with technology is off to a wonderful start!
