Monday Notes 9.10.18

*******************NEWS**********************

Congratulations!!!
Congratulations again to our staff and students for all their hard work and dedication to the International Baccalaureate program!!! We appreciate your efforts in creating the units, promoting inquiry, and supporting the attributes of the learner profile.

A huge thank you as well to Lib Roberts. Without her persistence, dedication, and passion for IB, this would not have happened!!!

We are thrilled to cultivate compassionate, knowledgeable, and inquiring learners!!!!!

Faculty Meeting
Please bring your phone and laptop (if you have one) to the faculty meeting this Tuesday. Thank you!!!!

PBIS Corner
We made it through August!

The focus this month is HALLWAYS. Please make sure your students are silent in the hallway so that other students can learn without distractions. Teach students the purpose of being silent in the hallways so that they will want to follow this rule. Did you know that student behavior in the hallway is tied to classroom management? Which is tied to TKES…

Buddy Bucks Store
The students are loving it! Please be sure to allow your students to shop on the days allocated to your grade. Buddy Bucks will not be accepted if they have written amounts on them and only Buddy Bucks are accepted at the store. But…we have new Buddy Bucks! 5’s 10’s 20’s and 50s!!! Shout out to Beth Owens for getting that together! The templates have been created, but give us until next week to have them printed and out in the front office.

Monday-Pre K & 5th
Tuesday-K and 4th
Wednesday- 3rd
Thursday-2nd
Friday-1st
*If there is no school on a Monday or Friday, that grade level will split up in alphabetical order based on homeroom teacher and shop on one day. For example, this past weekend was Labor Day so 5th would start with Ittig on Tuesday, May on Wednesday, Nobles on Thursday and Silverman on Friday. This way the store isn’t overcrowded.

Wendy’s Coupon
Teachers, please select 1 boy and 1 girl who show PAWS Up expectations in the HALLWAY anytime during the month of September to receive the Wendy’s coupon. Be sure to celebrate the students making positive choices in your classroom as well. (Send Beth Owens an email any time before the end of September and she will place the coupons in your box.)

Questions? Just email anyone on the PBIS team- Owens, Salmons, King, Spears, May, Berric, Faison, Lay, Mendoza, Lewis, DiBartolo

Weight Watchers at Work
Feel like you are ready for a change that can help your health and make you feel better!?  How about weight watchers here at High Point??  It could be one personal thing that you can check off before you ever leave the building!  We would have weigh-ins here at HPES with co-workers that can help keep you accountable 5 days a week!!  If you are already using the app to track, joining covers that cost too! 

If you are interested and still have questions, come to our session Wednesday at 3 in the media center.  We’ve done this in the past and it’s been amazing!  Let’s keep it going!

TKES
Professional Learning Plans and Goals:
If you are a FLEX employee, you will create a professional GOAL. If you are a FULL employee, you will create a professional PLAN. You can go ahead and create these now.

You can also sign-off on your TKES pre-conference now. Thank you for your patience.

TKES walkthroughs are beginning for all FULL TKES employees. We will be observing standards #3 - Instructional Learning Environment and #7 - Positive Learning Environment. If you have any questions about your observation, please contact your observer.

From Your KSU Coach
Schedule: I will be at High Point on Tuesday 9/11 and Thursday 9/13

Notes: How do you encourage your students to make their mark on the world? Join us in celebrating 'Dot Day'!

Dot Day website - http://www.thedotclub.org/dotday/

Read aloud of The Dot - https://youtu.be/1CHBrRyPb2I

Highlights: This week 2nd grade teachers guided their students through a Google Expedition! They found an expedition that aligned with their content, and used the teacher guide and prompts to teach students about outer space. If this is something your grade level is interested in, check out the files on the HP Google Drive under the 'Google' Category in the Media Center and Technology Files folder. Then reach out to Lib Roberts or myself for information on checking out the goggles and devices.

Continuous Learning and Reflection
A recent article from Edutopia discussed 6 great scaffolding strategies to use with students and how scaffolding and differentiation are two separate things. I love these strategies and it's a great reminder that sometimes "we have to slow down in order to go quickly."

1. Show and Tell
2. Tap into Prior Knowledge
3. Give Time to Talk
4. Pre-Teach Vocabulary
5. Use Visual Aids
6. Pause, Ask Questions, Pause, and Review
