Media Center News

A few reminders in case you missed them:

All students had Media Center orientation last week! (Yay!)

We are starting Digital Citizenship from now through October.  This curriculum is required by FCS for grades K-5.

It is very important that every class sign up for a slot on either "A week" or "B week" and remember to come to the media center during your time.  This time will repeat so you do not need to sign up again.

Please enter your technology and equipment wishes here https://goo.gl/forms/k1Df4tgZHERfQgde2

Please enter your "No Photo" students here.  If you get additional forms back later that are marked "No", please click again and enter the new names. https://goo.gl/forms/kWSO9yc0DgfumQtY2

Please collect all PURPLE Google permission slips and return them in one complete set to the media center.

All teachers - If you have a website or blog, please email Dennis so that we can update our school website with the links. Thank you!!!

                Weight Watchers at Work
Last winter/spring, we lost the equivalent of an average-sized adult!

Join us, this Fall, for a 12 week weight loss journey with your friends!  The Weight Watchers @ work program works because of the encouragement, motivation, inspiration and support you get from each other and its right here in our own Media Center.
Meetings will be Wednesdays from 3:00 -3:30 p.m.

                From Your KSU Coach
You made it through the first week of school! It was exciting to see and hear about your enthusiasm with technology. I made it into many rooms this week and scheduled more times to visit many rooms next week. I wanted to remind you to check out my website! You'll see reminders of when I'm in the school and resources to explore - https://www.smore.com/0j3th.
I'd also love to meet with your grade level soon to hear about your upcoming plans and brainstorm ways I can help you personalize students' learning. Just let me know! Feel free to email if you need advice, help or are just curious about technology.(romeh@fultonschools.org)

                Continuous Learning and Reflection

Below is a fabulous article about rethinking morning work. It definitely had me questioning what I used to do as a teacher! Check it out and let me know your thoughts! Could we do these simple things at High Point?!

                **************************************************
                Solar Eclipse
There has been a change regarding the solar eclipse. As of right now, High Point's eclipse glasses are not approved. We are waiting approval. If they get approved, we will not have to share the glasses and we will communicate the new plan as soon as possible. If they do not get approved, we will be doing the following:

Students will learn about the solar eclipse and safety precautions on the 17th and 18th of August in their homeroom classes and on the morning news program. Each homeroom teacher will receive a “Safety Precautions” document today as well as specific links to videos which explain the solar eclipse and how to remain safe. Keeping our kids safe IS CRITICAL!

On the 16th, classes in PreK-5th grade will paired up and baggies with the appropriate amount of glasses will be handed out for them to share.
                The pairs are as follows:

PreK – Lay and Mayhall (22 glasses)
K – Marinos and Foster, Gopal and Abernethy, Spears (3 baggies of 20 glasses)
1st – Cornibe and Churchwell, Berric and Todd, Pereira and Negrin (3 baggies of 20 glasses)
2nd – Mahle and Quist, Bradshaw, Sapp and Riendeau (3 baggies of 20 glasses)
3rd – Hawkins and Milazzo, Collins and Cefaratti, Jones and Gilmore (3 baggies of 20 glasses)
4th – Jannausch and Rosenbaum, Strafford and Johnston (2 baggies of 25 glasses)
5th – May and Silverman, Ittig and Nobles (2 baggies of 28 glasses)

Students can practice wearing the glasses on the 17th and 18th.
On the 21st, students will be able to go with their classes to document the solar eclipse. We will not be able to go outside during the total eclipse unless students have safety glasses!!! Students who do not have permission will stay with the cooperating class.

Students have to have permission in order to participate on this day!!!! Permission forms will go home Tuesday with students. Flyers have been placed in your mailboxes to SEND HOME TODAY!!!

                **************************************************
iRead Information for K-3 HR Teachers
I wanted to provide you some updated information regarding iRead .  Please take some time to review the information below.  I have also put an iRead user guide in your mailboxes that includes step-by-step directions for both students and you to access and log into the software.

Launchpad icon:  The icon on LaunchPad has changed this year.  Teachers and students will no longer see an iRead icon; instead the icon will be named HMH Central.  Teachers use their email username and password to log into LaunchPad.  Students use their 10 digit student ID and birthdate (MMDDYYYY) to log into LaunchPad.  Please note that iRead will only be accessible through LaunchPad now.  It cannot be accessed via a desktop shortcut or an external link/url address.

Single sign-on access:  This year iRead will be single-sign on.  Once students click the HMH central icon on LaunchPad they will automatically be taken to iRead and will not have to enter their username and password again. Teachers and administrators will no longer have to enter a separate password to access iRead!

Initial screener:  Students will need to take the initial screener again this year.  This has been automatically reset for all students; once they log in for the first time they will be prompted to complete the screener.

                Any questions, please see Hess.

                **************************************************
                iReady Training
iReady is for homeroom teachers 3rd - 5th grade. The county will be offering a required training for all 3rd - 5th grade teachers on August 28th. Students are not allowed to use iReady until teachers have received training. Since we used iReady last year, we will be differentiating the training for you. There will be two sessions, each 3 hours long. Please click on the link below to sign up for the training that best suits your needs. Please sign up by August 18th.

                **************************************************
                Google Account
In order for everyone to access folders and post lesson plans, all teachers need to have a Google Education Account. It is the same as your Fulton email but has fcsgaonline.org at the end. If you do not have an account, please sign up for one as soon as possible.

                **************************************************
                Universal Screener
The universal screener that is replacing STAR was approved Friday. We will now have FastBridge. Everyone K-5 will be taking the screener from August 21st - Septemeber 8th. We will create a schedule for classes to take the universal screener during their appropriate blocks (Reading during Reading and Math during Math). We appreciate your patience with these last minute additions!!!

                ******VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE******

In Ms. Spears kindergarten classroom, students use this chart to check in every morning when they enter the classroom. They can choose if they are happy, sad, or tired. This helps her to track who has come in so far and allows her to gauge how all of her student are starting their days.
