News
It is with very sad emotions that we tell you Chellye Pomeroy will be retiring at the end of this month. We all know that Chellye is a powerhouse and someone we can all rely on to fix any problem or get any technology device up and running. Now it's time for her to be the same powerhouse for her family. We are tremendously sad to see Chellye leave but were lucky to have her with us! Please join me in congratulating her on her retirement and wishing her well!

Chellye's official last day will be Monday, August 31st.

The county will be sending out people to support us and will be in charge of finding someone to replace our "irreplaceable Pomeroy."

In the meantime, please continue sending emails to the ITservicedesk@fultonschools.org if you have an issue you need assistance with.

What I've Been Thinking About…

Check out this great article from Ms. Roberts about how videos can increase student ownership in our classrooms. From creating videos for peer-to-peer instruction to recording themselves reflecting on their learning, videos are a powerful tool to help increase student achievement.

****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE****

In Ms. Silverman’s 5th grade math class, students were utilizing the Promethean White Board as an independent work station while she met with a small group to deliver targeted instruction.  Not only were her students trained and trusted to use the active board independently but it also allowed this device to be used to its fullest potential. Setting up procedures and routines is important as well as empowering students to be in charge of their own digital learning.

*****MATH CORNER**********

Thank you, everyone, for a great start for our math PLCs!  Brian and I enjoyed getting together with you to help you get going with your data and Standards of Math Practice.

The GADOE has put together a very nice wiki for common core math.  You can find tons of info on math routines, lessons, how-to’s for number talks, and other teaching resources.    You will find the links you need on the right side of the webpage.  Check it out!

This Prezi from the GADOE links to math resources across the web.  It also has the problem solving video we viewed in PLCs.  Swoop around and uncover some good stuff!

ILLUMINATIONS LESSONS FROM NCTM
Pre-k to Grade 2
How Many Letters Are in Your Name?
This is a great beginning get-to-know-you activity for first grade as an activity and as a review of ordinal numbers. For a kindergarten class, students should be familiar with their own name, and this lesson should be taught after you have taught the numbers 1 to 10.

Grades 3-5
Exploring with Math Trails: Using Pictures to Expand Students Awareness of the World
“Where’s the math?” This is a question that can be answered by students as they examine pictures from a virtual math trail. Expanding a student’s awareness of the world is emphasized throughout this activity. As students share thoughts and verbally express ideas, they are able to grow and communicate with other mathematically.

BRAIN TEASERS FOR GREAT MATH CONVERSATIONS
You can download these strategy-based brain teasers and solutions in PDF.  Good for homework and for activating lessons!
Take advantage of NCTM to find lessons and interactives for your math class.  These are great ways to start the year and add fun to units all year long.
