Congratulations!

Changes
As some of you may already be aware, Sonya Johnson resigned from her third grade position last week due to personal issues. We are deeply saddened to see her leave. She was a wonderful addition to the High Point family and will be missed.
Lindsay Hayes will be taking over the third grade classroom until we find a replacement and Laura Boyd will be her substitute.
We have to wait until after the 10-day count to hire a replacement. Our hope is to have a permanent teacher by August 24th.

In the meantime, I appreciate your support of the third grade team, Lindsey, and the students in that classroom. It is times like this when I am extremely grateful for people who step up when needed, support their teammates, and ensure that students continue to receive a quality education in the midst of transition.

Congratulations Ms. Hastings!
Congratulations to Stacia Hastings, our Occupational Therapist!  She was awarded her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy over the weekend! We are thrilled she is part of our High Point family and appreciate the expertise and creative solutions she shares with staff and students!

Blessings in a Backpack
We will be partnering with Blessings in a Backpack again this year. This nonprofit provides bags of food for some of our students to take home on the weekends that may not have enough food at home. Students that received bags last year will continue to receive them this year. We would also love to have any suggestions from you. Please click the link below to recommend any kids for this program that you think will benefit. Please recommend students by Wednesday, however feel free to add kids to the list throughout the year if other students come up. The first bags will go home this Friday with letters explaining the program to parents and how to opt out if they do not want to receive these bags. I will let individual teachers know which of their students receive bags and the procedure for picking them up. Thank you!

Visuals of Best Practice
Ms. Collins and Ms. Hayes' class partnered with Hannah Rome to talk about "Caring for Technology!"

Kindergarten teachers and their paras are partnering with Hannah to create centers that they will all three man to teach the kindergartners to be tech savvy while also caring for their devices!  What a great spin on the Learner Profile attribute "CARING"!!

iReady and iRead
K-2 will be using iRead and iReady Math this year. There will be a training on August 23rd or August 24th (for a 1/2 day) on iReady Math so students can access iReady Math AFTER teachers have been trained.  More information about when your training will take place will be coming out. With regards to iRead, please hold off putting your students on until the county gives me the go ahead. Be patient! It will be the next day or so.

3-5 will be using iReady Reading and iReady Math this year. There will be a training on August 23rd or August 24th(for a 1/2 day) on iReady Math so students can access iReady Math AFTER teachers have been trained. More information about when your training will take place will be coming out.  With regards to iReady Reading, students can get on once the diagnostic window opens which is August 20th. Remind your students to take their time and do their best on the diagnostic because this sets their "path" for the first semester.

Any questions, see Sheri Hess

ESOL NEWS
Students new to the country WILL receive grades in all subjects.  In the past we waited a semester to provide grades.  That is NO LONGER the case.  All ESOL students will receive grades for all subjects regardless of how long they have been in the country.

WeightWatchers at Work
We are once again going to bring Weight Watchers at Work to High Point. We need 13 people to sign up to have weekly meetings here (after school on Wednesdays.) This has been a great way to have accountability and companionship on our health journeys.
If you have any interest in in Weight Watchers at Work, please let Sheri Hess know.

SST Meeting Schedule
SST meetings will begin in a few weeks. The district is busy filling positions in the Intervention Services department, and we are also waiting for our new psychologist to arrive. Also, most of the math and reading interventions will be done by the EIP department; Mr. Madej will contact you if your student needs an intervention in another area. Updates will be coming soon. We appreciate your patience!!!

From Your KSU Coach
Schedule: I will be at High Point on T 8/14 and Th 8/16.

Notes: How are you including technology in your behavior management plan? Have you considered teaching expectations for safe and careful use of the iPads, laptops and desktop computers? Check out images below to see highlights of how students in 3rd grade are practicing good choices when handling their laptops.

Continuous Learning and Reflection
This is an incredible article which supports our efforts to be intentional, make learning relevant, and focus on relationships. I LOVE every single word of this article. When inquiry-based learning is present in a school, four characteristics are seen:

1. The learner is actively involved in the construction of understanding.
2. The teacher is a guide and mentor
3. The whole child is celebrated and nurtured.
4. Structures and frameworks exist but learning isn't overly prescribed or standardized.

Also, if you watch the short video "Project Daniel" it shows how inquiry, compassion, and intention can make a difference on so many people!
