Bus Driver Appreciation Week
Next week is Bus Driver Appreciation Week! If you would like, please have your students make a card or write a letter to their bus driver thanking them for all their hard work and patience with our students!

We will also have large posters that say "We Love Our Bus Drivers" posted outside the cafeteria. Please have your students sign their name to the posters as they are leaving the cafeteria or in the morning on the 13th. We will post them on the 16th in the front of our building.

GA Pre-K Week
Last week we celebrated GA Pre-K Week and Dr. Rose was able to come and read to our Pre-K students!  The students were so impressive and well-behaved! A huge thank-you to the PreK staff for making this great opportunity happen for our kids!

Student Attendance
As you might already know, our student attendance is part of our CCRPI school score. It is imperative that students come to school in order to learn!!

I will be pulling attendance reports each month and reviewing them with Vaneisa Hutchins, our school social worker. Please make sure that you are reaching out to parents if a child has more than three unexcused absences. If a child has accrued more than 5 medical days and you are concerned about their attendance, please reach out to Vaneisa as well.

The chart below are the number of student absences for 31 days (August 7th til Sept 22nd).

RTI Updates
Brian and Kerstin are working to put together additional T2 groups for reading and math.  T2 services for these students must begin by October 23 as well as progress monitoring. They will need to meet with each team for at least 40 minutes to give provide the groups and interventions.  Each team leader has been asked to schedule a time during common planning to accomplish this task. After this meeting, it is important for each grade level to review the RTI Spreadsheet and correct any errors. All Tier 2 and Tier 3 students will need a completed plan uploaded to EASY, and Brian cannot accomplish this for you if the sheets are not updated.

Guided Reading
Brian and Sheri have almost completed observations of every homeroom teacher during one guided reading session. This data will be shared at the next staff meeting. Brian is now ready to work with grade levels or individuals who would like to dive deeper into guided reading in the form of coaching, modeling lessons, lesson writing, or text selection. Please contact Brian if you are interested.

CNN in 10
Beginning Friday, October 20th, an edited version of “CNN in 10”, formerly known as CNN Student News, will be available for you on Fridays in place of the news show. It showcases International events, human interest stories, social studies, and world news.  I will HEAVILY edit the content to make sure it is appropriate for elementary school. PLEASE DO NOT show ‘CNN in 10’ directly from the CNN website, as it has not been edited.

Especially Kindergarten and Grade 1… you will need to preview the first edition before showing it Friday and decide if it will work for your students.

The link to the EDITED VERSION will be on the High Point news show website on Fridays only

I hope this helps you incorporate more International studies into your classroom discussions!

Bert's Big Thank You
It’s that time of year again! Every year the Bert Show hosts an event called Bert’s Big Thank You! The goal of this project is to put a handwritten, heartfelt letter in the hand of every military member who is overseas and will not be home for Thanksgiving. If you choose to participate there will be a box for letter donations outside of Ms. Silverman’s door on the 5th grade hallway, room 135. (You can also place them in her mailbox).

Here are the letter specifications:
• All letters must be on 8.5” x 11” paper or smaller.
• Please do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper.
You can decorate using crayons, markers, pens or pencils.
• NO construction paper.
• Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only.
• Please do not send greeting cards or photographs.
• Feel free to include your mailing and email address – sometimes military members will write back!
• Individual letters should not be sealed in envelopes.
• Please do not send anything except letters!

If you have any other questions, check out the Big Thank You website:

Class Lists and Report Cards
We appreciate everyone for being patient as Rhodope is cleaning up and correcting the class lists. As per the reporting timeline, you will receive your grade verification sheet in your mailboxes tomorrow. Please make the corrections in TAC and also make the corrections on the verification sheet. It should be returned and SIGNED by the 16th. This should give everyone plenty of time to check their own report cards and have a colleague check it as well.
If your class lists are not correct in TAC when you receive your grade verification sheet, please let Pitchford know.

Please remember that for every negative comment, there needs to be a positive comment.

Also, if a child is going to be receiving a failing grade (U or F), documentation stating that parents have been notified should be kept by the teacher.

ESOL Strategies
Find My Match
Purpose: To develop reading and speaking skills as well as learning a new concept through interaction with class members.

Activity: Each student is given an index card or vocabulary card that matches information on another student’s card. The students walk around the room reading aloud the information on their card. They find their match and read the information on their cards to each other. Teacher calls time. Each team shares their match with the class.

Examples: Homonyms, vocabulary words and meanings, math problems and solutions.

********VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE*******

I know many of you took pictures at the different schools that were visited during our IB School Visits! Lib Roberts will share the feedback, ideas, and pictures to everyone however this board in a 5th grade classroom really stood out to me! An inquiry cycle involving students is a great "best practice!" They were "tuning in, finding out, sorting out, going further, making conclusions, and then taking action!"
