Congratulations to Our Oratorical Students
Last Friday, some of our 4th and 5th grade students participated in High Point's Oratorical Competition. Each student was in charge of writing and delivering a speech based on how optimism helps them to succeed. Our students did an AMAZING job! Their speeches were powerful, funny, and unique! A HUGE thank you to Lori Simon for her tireless efforts in supporting, leading, and organizing our Oratorical group to make them successful! We would also like to thank Yoneiby Pierre, Renee Kozlicki, and Emily Rhoades who supported Lori and our students with their speeches.
Please take a moment to congratulate each child who participated in the Oratorical Competition as well as our winners. They will go to the District Oratorical Competition to represent our school.

**********************************************************Data Walks
Our county's lead DSS came to walk-through our building and give us some pre-data in regards to our implementation of data walls. Her informal walk-throughs gave us some great information in regards to where we are and where we need to go in order to meet our Strategic Long-Term goal of students taking more accountability and ownership of their learning and progress.
Because of time and events, she was only able to walk through some classes in grades 1,2,4, and 5.
Based off her observations, we are:
Because of time and events, she was only able to walk through some classes in grades 1,2,4, and 5.
Based off her observations, we are:
- Making our data walls student friendly
- Making our data walls student oriented
What we are going to be working on more:
- Talking with students about next steps
- Using the data wall to help student reflect on their learning
Ms. Mullikin was very impressed with 2nd grade and how their data walls met most of the walk-through criteria. Below is a picture from Ms. Crow's classroom so that everyone can have a visual of how we can have clear student goals, how the data can be relevant for students, and how they can reflect on their progress.
MARKET DAY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!!!!
Congratulations to third grade who held their first ever MARKET DAY for their 3rd grade students!! Students were asked to make everything they sold and, in the end, the grade level made $1000!!!! As you can tell, the administrative team really racked up on items!!! This money will either go towards 3rd grade's field trips or will be donated to a charity. The grade level will involve the students with how their money will be spent!
We are so impressed with how this relates to the IB philosophy!!!! Students were learning standards in real-world applications!!!!

PBIS This WeekA huge thank you to Beth Owens for helping create our Bathroom Posters which have our expectations for behavior in the restrooms. Each restroom will have a poster put up no later than Tuesday. Please make sure that you take a moment to explain the posters to your students and why it's important they show PAWS Up behavior in our restrooms!

SQR Evidence Walls
If you are in the office, take a second to look at all the "Evidence Post-It" posters you all created at our SQR training last Tuesday. There are TONS of great ways we can show our mastery of the Learning and Teaching Standards!

*****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICE********
In Ms. Newman’s 2nd grade advanced math class, they
created this line plot together based on the 3rd grade pre-test
that they took. She tied this in to teaching that math standard and made it
authentic and a meaningful application of the standard. They identified
each standard as they went along and had meaningful dialog about the trends –
“What are we strong on and what do we need to focus on for learning.”
Then on another day She asked them to write one comparing question and one
put-together question about the data. They generated two questions with a buddy
and we compiled them into 5 questions as a class for analyzing the data( see 2nd
picture).
Authentic learning is real life learning. They are real life
tasks that provide learners with opportunities to connect directly with the
real world.
The writers' gallery/pledge is hosted by Ms. Pereira's class this week.
The writers' gallery/pledge will be hosted by Ms. Negrin's class next week.
