What I've Been Thinking About…
In a recent article, one teacher talked about how she struggled to find a more student-centered and technology-embedded classroom. She stated:
"I wonder how often, as teachers, we have classes that feel like failures, but they’re really not. Instead it’s a messy, awkward success, given the stage that our students are at. How often do we want the end result — engaged, articulate, deep discussions — without being willingly to do the hard work to get there? Instead of seeing all the struggling as the necessary first step, we see it as a failure and don’t try it again. I know I've been guilty of this."

What a powerful statement. Click on the link below if you would like to read more about her journey.

Oratorical Needs
Our Oratorical group has always represented High Point extremely well. We are very proud of our staff who help prepare our students as well as the students who work hard and accept the challenge of writing speeches and presenting them.
In order to effectively run this program, we need your help!
We have decided to only offer this program to 5th grade students. If you are willing to help one student during the morning times (7:15-7:40) with their writing and speeches, we would greatly appreciate it.

The dates needed are:
Sept-Dec once a week with speech writing
Jan-Mar twice a week with reading and presenting their speech.

The students will come to you if you have a homeroom. Please email Lori Simon if you are interested in helping. Thank you!!

PBIS This Week
  • Congratulations to Staci Arnold who received a Buddy Brag and received the "gift of time" this week!!!
  • This week we will focus on RECESS behaviors. Please make sure that you are reviewing proper recess behavior with your students and complimenting others who are displaying PAWS up recess behavior by giving them tickets. Supervision during recess is key so thank you for always watching them during this time!
  • Thanks to Mr. McCoy, who donated a candy machine that we have placed in the office area.  Each child who gets their ticket pulled on Friday will have their name announced on the Morning News Monday and will receive a candy tube to take home along with a HPES blue bracelet. Both of these items should stay in their book bag until they go home.

Technology Tips of the Week

·         Reminder…our password reset will occur every 60 days now; it will most likely happen in September and you will receive a reminder. Your password should be 8 characters in length and include an upper case letter, lower case letter, numeric digit and a symbol.  Also, when you change your password, BE SURE to change it on all of your devices (i.e. iPads, smart phones, or any device accessing our FCS Wi-Fi). If you get locked out, it’s usually because you haven’t changed your password on all devices.

·         Our Z, T, and G ‘drives’ are all partitioned parts of one server space.  Our allocated server space is FULL!!!  Please look through your Z drive and anything you have posted on the G Drive.  If YOU have placed items on the G drive and they are obsolete or unnecessary, please remove them.  Also, keep in mind that we cannot save pictures, music or videos on our individual Z drives.  Please help our ‘drives’ get out of the RED.

College Spirit Wear
On the first Wednesday of each month our school will participate in College Spirit Day in which staff members are asked to wear college spirit wear. You can wear any college shirt with jeans on this day. Please take an opportunity to talk to your students about colleges. Students can be given morning work or can complete an independent center pertaining to your college: where is it located, how many students attend, what is the mascot, etc....  The purpose of this day is to support our county goal of having 85% of our students be College Ready. Thank you for supporting this goal!!!

    Strategies That Most Impact Achievement

    In My Head/Makes Me Think
Students fill in a thought bubble with words and/or pictures to show what they think about when they think about the topic to be studied.  This is a great whole group activating strategy for any grade.

    Picture Postcard
At the beginning of a unit or as a formative assessment, ask students to jot down what they already know about a topic on the lined side of an index card.  On the blank side of the “postcard” students draw a picture that represents their thinking.  This is a great idea to see how kids are using and visualizing math strategies.  Have them send their postcards to classmates as a way to share different ways to solve a problem.

    ****VISUALS OF BEST PRACTICES****

In Ms. Spears’ Kindergarten class, students are working in small groups. This group of students are practicing their color words. They are “making” the words with magnetic letters. Using letter tiles, magnetic letters or foam letters is very important for students to be able to see that letters make sounds and that those letters then make a word. Making words allows students to manipulate the sounds of language by physically arranging letters to form words and focus on how moving the letters changes the sound and meaning of words.
**Struggling readers may enjoy the opportunity to play with language in a hands-on format and use their creativity to form new words.**

    *****WRITERS' GALLERY**********

The writers' gallery/pledge is hosted by Ms. Silverman's class this week.

The writers' gallery/pledge will be hosted by Ms. Griffin's class next week.
